TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.

CITY COUNCIL'S RESOLUTION

REPLY FROM BOROUGH COUNCIL,

The question of tramway extensions at' Mount Eden has been further discussed by the Borough Council, and the town clerk has been directed to forward a reply to the City Council's statement that it considered that the Mount Eden Council was in error in assuming ! merely conditional proposals as an agrecj merit respecting extensions. i The letter to be forwarded to Jhe City I Council refers to the meeting of the two j councils on October 4, 1923, and states that the City Council then resolved to make the extensions and notified the Mount Eden Council accordingly. The meeting, itis stated, dealt with the formation; of the road in permanent material, and the demand of the City Council that Mount Eden should do this work was considered definite evidence that the City Council intended to make the extensions, and did not contemplate any alterations in the conditions of the deed of delegation, .otherwise it would not have "been interest ?d in the condition of any part of the m;in roads beyond the tram terminus. On November 26, 1923, the Mayor of Auckland addressed ratepayers on the loan to be submitted, giving a schedule of the works, including quotations >if £23,000 each for extensions on Mount Eden Road and Dominion Road. He also quoted at length from a report by the tramways manager regarding the comparative merits of buses, trams and railless cars, and maintained that trams presented distinct advantages. Negotiations in regard to the tram lines and the, concreting of the roads took rtlsice frequently and on July 14 last the tramway.') department wrote, stating it would carry" out work on the extensions, involving blasting, in advance of the borough's concreting work. The council therefore considered it was justified in assuming that the City Council had agreed "to make the extensions s,nd that the propcsal to do so was not conditional.

In conclusion the letter stated that the Mt. Eden Council was prepared to .confer with the City Council the matters in question.
