CHAFF IMPORTATIONS.

ALLEGATION OF DUMPING. THE MARLBOROUGH PROTEST. IBY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COBRESrONDENT.) BLENHEIM. Friday Following up a recent resolution, the Marlborough Produce Merchants' Association has been representing to the Government, through the member for the district., the disorganising effects that tho prospective heavy importations of Australian chaff threaten to have on the agricultural interests of New Zealand, and urging it to reimpose the duty of £1 per ton that was removed in connection with the introduction of the reciprocal tariff a few years ago. Correspondence has been passing on the subject and it is understood that the Minister for Customs, the Hon. W. Dowuie Stewart, has not been sympathetic to the request. In his last communication to Mr. W. J. Girling, M.P., the Minister pointed out that there had been no appearance of dumping and indicated incidentally that compliance with the request for protection would involve complicated negotiations with the Commonwealth in relation to the reciprocal tariff. The Merchants' Association, however, has forwarded to Mr. Girling for transmission to tho Minister, specific evidence as to dumping. The Grain Merchants' Association at Christchurch has been interesting itself ir the movement. It has written expressing a desire to co-operate with tho Marlborough Association in the matter, and has asked for detailed information, which has been supplied.
