TRAMWAY TENDER.

CONTRACT FOR YEAR.

SECURED BY DOMINION FIRM.

ENGLISH PRICE SLIGHTLY LESS.

A report upon various tenders was submitted to a special meeting of the City Council last evening by the Tramways and Electricity Committee. For trucks, brake, and draw gear, the committee recommended that the tender of the Auckland Electric Construction Company, representing the British Electrical Engineering Company, of England, of £4060, should be accepted.

Mr. T. Bloodworth said that the sec-

oml lowest tender was from a New Zealand firm, and it was only £39 more than the English prices, allowing for the inspection cost of £60. In view of the narrow margin, and the fact that the placing of the order in the Dominion would provide a good deal of labour, he moved that the New Zealand tender ho accepted. In seconding the amendment, Mr. J. A. (.'. Alluni said the local tender of Messrs. Morton, Rush and Griffiths was for £4159, and if it were accepted it would involve an expenditure in wages of about £1600. The same firm had an order in hand, the work being mainly clone in Dunedin. I Mr. G. K. Hutchinson said tlio lowest | tender was from an English firm of good [ standing, and if the committee had de- | dined to recommend its acceptance, it would have been on dangerous ground, j The amendment was carried. I Onlv one tender was received for ten tram oar bodies, the tenderers being D.S.O. and Cousins and Cousins, Ltd., and their price £15,995. The committee made no recommendation in this case, reporting that the price represented an increase of 10 per cent, on the previous price. On the motion of the Mayor, the tender was referred back to the committee, with power to act. The following tenders were accepted:— Motors, etc.: Messrs. Tollcy and Sons, £368 10s and £31 10s; Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Ltd., £310; Messrs. Kidd, Garrett, Ltd.. £115 10s; Messrs. A. D. Riley and Co., £275. Storage bins, lockers: Messrs.
