WHANGAREI BOROUGH.
OVERHEAD RAILWAY. CONTRIBUTION TO THE COST. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAN GAD EI. Wednesday. The ratepayers of Whangarei to-day voted upon a proposed loan of £7100 to provide modern tiled swimming baths in Central Park, and to contribute £5450 toward the cost of carrying the railway overhead through portion of the town. At a public meeting held the previous evening the view was generally expressed that the timo was inopportune to undertake the expenditure on the baths, and that the borough should concentrate on the overhead railway, so as not to lot the opportunity of getting it pass by. The bath loan was defeated by 349 votes to 59. The other proposal was carried by 261 votes to 136.
