PIAKO COUNTY AFFAIRS.

PROBLEMS OF ROADING.

CONCRETE AND BITUMEN WORK.

[BV: TELUGBAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ]

TE AROHA. Wednesday

The Piako County Council met on Monday, the chairman, Mr. F. W. Walters, presiding.

A motion was passed relieving the Manawaru riding of sharing the cost of maintaining tho shoulders of the concrete road, throwing ordinary maintenance on the Waihou riding, loans to bear the cost of any extraordinary damage. Considerable discussion took place regarding the slow progress being made with tho construction of the concrete road. The mixer, whether in use or not, has been costing the riding £6 per week. On Mr. Kennedy's motion it was decided that after a further two days' work the riding shall only be charged for the mixer while in use.

A motion was received from the Railway Department that the charges on bitumen from Auckland to Wait Or, would be 35s per ton. This was considered too high. Tho engineer said the estimates of the cost of the work allowed for £1 per ton and the department had given them to understand that the charge would not be more than 25s per ton. It was decided to obtain a report from the health oflicer on the sanitary conditions of Waitoa with a view to creating a special drainage area for tho township.

It was decided to send the Riwitahi Ratepayers' Association the following information in regard to tho Kiwitahi special metalling loan:—Engineer's estimate, £16.450; amount of loans, £13.150; anticipated Government grant, £3300; already grunted, £900. Tho engineer considered that there would be sufficient money to do tho whole of the work. The quarry report showed that for a month 1565 cubic yards of metal had been crushed, and that a profit of £240 10s 3d bad ■ een made.

The clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to raise a loan of £12.700 for tar sealing No. 7 road, and metalling the side roads, the rate not to exceed 3d in the £1.
