WONDERFUL WIRELESS.
THE BEAM'S ADVANTAGES. ECONOMY AND EFFICIENCY. Australian oud N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10.5.; p.m. LONDON. Dec. 11.
In tho ourse of a lecture on " Radio Developments," delivered to the members of the Royal Society of Arts, Signer Marconi said that he had so rapidly developed tho beam system that it was now practicable both by day and by night.. It was not desirable that wireless messages should be broadcasted throughout the world. He instanced that messages from Britain to Australian were scattered simultaneously in Europe, America, Asia and South Africa.
" I can understand the utility of nondirectional stations for naval and marine purposes," said Signor Marconi, " but ordinarily, for purposes of secrecy and economy, I advocate a concentration of energy into the directional beam." Ho said he was convinced the short-wave beam system was capable of transmitting a far greater number of words daily between England and Australia than was possible by tho powerful, cumbersome and expensive stations used or proposed to be used, for Imperial commercial communications. Referring to his recent experiments, Signor Marconi said complete transmission at fixed intervals had been carried out between Sydney and Poldhu for 23 hours out of tho 24, although tho waves traversed the summer /.one, and wero therefore subjected to the effect of tho varying conditions existing during the present month.
Successful beam trials had also been carried out with Canada, the United States, Brazil, the Argentine, Australia, Bombay, Karachi and Capetown. These fully confirmed his expectations.
He predicted reduced long-disiance rates compared with telegraphy. It was reasonable to expect that it would soon bo possible to broadcast speeches throughout the whole Empire, cither in daylight or at night.
