CONFERENCE OF PARTIES.
HOPES OF A SETTLEMENT.
A. ar.d N.Z. MELBOURNE. Dec. 12. After a meeting of the Federal Cabinet, Mr. S. M. Bruce, Prime Minister, announced that he had intervened in the waterside strike. He had called a conference of the parties.
This conference met later in the dajv The proceedings were Ln camera, but it is expected that a settlement will bs reached.
The small dispute between the Ship Painters and Dockers' Union and tho Melbourne Harbour Trust has extended to tho Seamen's Union. If the matter is not settled quickly a general hold-up of the port, similar to that which occurred at Fremantle, is feared. The trouble arose over vessels being docked by non-unionists employed by tho trust.
