There wore good supplies of poultry yesterday but the demand was remarkably keen for young birds for the table and the prices realised were quite exceptional for this period of the year. FRUIT. Prices hav e now recovered after the drop during the wet weather. Gooseberries brought 8s Gd to 10s Gd a case, tomatoes hothouse. 3d to 9d a lb; outdoor. 3d to 6d • plums, Sharpo's early, 6s to 8s 6d a case; Evans early, 5s Gd to 8s; Christmas plums, 5s to Gs Gd; ripe bananas, 24s to 265; hothouse grapes, Is 9d to 2s a lb.; strawberries lOd to Is Id a chip: cherriea, ex Sydney 5h to 24s a case, according to sample, some of the lots opening up very wet; Sydney Valencia oranges. 18s to 245. Eggs were in gocc! supply, hen eggs bringing Is s}d to Is Gd. and duck eggs, Is 4Jd to Is sd. There was a good supply of farmers' butter, the demand being also good. Prices ranged from Is Id to Is 4d a lb., the average being Is 2{d.

POULTRY. Demand for young birds for Inblo purposes was unusually keen and in apito of a, good supply, prices wore exceptionally hitrh for this time of the year. Cockerels over BJlb. in weight brought prices averaging 2s 8d u lb. live weight. Cockerels of 2Jlb. to 4 Jib. realised 7s lOd to 10u 7d: lighter cockerels, 4s to 7s; small cockerels. Is J)d to lis 'Jd; heavy lines, 8.0., etc., 3s to -is Cd; light hens, W.L.. etc.. Os to 2b Ca; young drakes. CANTERBURY MARKETS, [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. Business continues slack. There are reports of forward wheat sales at 7b a bushel down to 6 ! i Bd. but millers have not yet (started operating. Oats have gone back still further, and aro now quoted forward at 8a tid f.0.b.. or about 2s 9d on trucks. Growers ure unlikely to rush the market at this figure, particularly with sacks at flky-high prices. The policy is likely to be one of stacking and waiting for an improvement in tlio market, Sales of ryeflruas have been made at 5s 3d a bushel, or 3s on trucks to farmers. It has been reported from the South that the carry-over of ryegrass is small. This is not tho case in Canterbury. Christchuroh and Timaru merchants among tlieni ure holding over 2000 sacks of last year's seed. Potatoes are easier. Timaru crop quotation" to farmers arc on the basis of £3 15s a ton.
