CITY LOAN PROPOSALS.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

NEXT* WEDNESDAY'S POLL.

The most important loan proposals yet placed before the people of Auckland are to bo submitted at a poll on Wednesday next, when the ratepayers will be asked to sanction the raising of the sum of £710,000 for street improvements. Of this amount £460,000 is for the formation and improvement of secondary streets not yet permanently paved, £200,000 is for the paving in concrete of the remainder of the chief traffic thoroughfares, and £50,000 for the widening of Quay Street, including the acquisition of Gladstone Buildings.

The financial proposals in connection with this loan will bo fully explained by the Mayor, Sir James Gunson, at a meeting of ratepayers,- to be held in the Town Hall concert chamber on Monday evening. Mr. Charles Rhodes will preside.

The Mayor stated yesterday that the council's expenditure on streets in the past had been relative to the needs of the various districts, but these loan proposals would embrace street improve>ments over the entire city area. While the amount of £710,000 was larger than previous loans in view of the growth and progress of Auckland, it was not more than sufficient for the needs of the city to provide up-to-date facilities and to bring the streets up to the most modern standard.

Voting on these proposals will take place on Wednesday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., ample polling places having been arranged in all sections of the city area. A full list of the streets on which the proposed loan is to be expended is published in the Heeauj of to-day. The meeting on Monday evening will deal solely with streets, but general administrative questions and many policy matters, including the Civic Square, will be considered on tho occasion of the biennial election's in April next. The council has decided to hold a chain of meetings throughout the city during tho week prior to the elections, when tho fullest information will be afforded on all branches of the administration, both with reference to finance and works.
