In opening the first public sitting of the Food Prices Inquiry Commission Sir Auckland Geddes said its task was to discover why food now cost 79 per cent, more than in July. 1914. "We arc here to ascertain the truth and not to white-wash either side," he remarked. Most of the evidence would bo taken in public, said Sir Auckland, but some witnesses must be heard privately.
The statistical officer of the Board of Trade, Mr. Flux, gave evidence to the effect that Britain's expenditure on all kinds of foods at retail prices totalled between £1,250,000,000 and £1,400,000,000 a year. (
