HEAVY BAIN IN CITY.

NO WORK ON WHARVES. DELAY CAUSED TO SHIPPING. Very boisterous and wet weather was experienced in Auckland yesterday with the wind varying in force and direction. Rain began to fall at about 5 a.m. and shortly afterwards a steady downpour set in which continued air day, almost without intermission. The wind freshened 'from the north-east and in the afternoon a gale was blowing from that direction. A sudden change took place in the ovening, and at about 5 p.m. the wind changed to the south-west and blew hard •for a time from that direction. When the wind changed the rain ceased, but the sky was very threatening to the westward up to a late hour.

The heavy rain during the day prevented any cargo work being done on vessels in port and in consequence the departures of most of them will have to be postponed. Outdoor work in connection with drainage, excavating and other work was prevented by -the heavy rain and consequently a large number of labourers and others were unemployed during the day.

The rainfall for the 24 hours ending at midnight as registered by the Herald gauge was 1.95 inches.

The barometer which had registered about 29.85 in. for some days, began to fall steadily at an early hour yesterday. By midday the reading was 29.50 in. After that the fall was more pronounced, and at 4 p.m. the reading was 29.17 in. The storm centre apparently passed about that time as the barometer immediately began to rise almost as quickly as it had fallen, the reading at midnight being 29.45 in.
