WATERFRONT ROAD.
ST. HELIERS IMPROVEMENT.
COMMENCEMENT OF THE WORK.
BATHING SHEDS IN BRICK.
Work has been commenced on the first section of the seawall and waterfront reading work at St. Heliers, which will make a great improvement to the foreshore and stop the inroads of the sea which for some time have been threatening the roadway. A tender by Messrs. Wilcox and Co., for £6452. has been accepted by the Tamaki Road Board, being within a few pounds of the estimate by the engineer, Mr. F. E. Powell. The seawall, which will be of bluestone and of a substantial construction, with rough stone parapet, will extend practically the whole length of the bay. The space behind the wall will be filled in and grassed, and the esplanade when finished will be nowhere less than 70ft. wide and will form a fine promenade. There will be several flights of steps to the beach, and the completed work should greatly enhance the appearance of this popular waterfront.
A further attraction will be the new bathing sheds, which are to be erected in brick, and will have a pleasing appearance.
