THE ADVANCES DEPARTMENT.
Sir,—l always understood that the' money at the disposal of the department for lending purposes was intended for a ' certain class of settler, where safety ofadvance, industry and position generally warranted financial assistance. Under ' these circumstances, it seems to me quite" irregular that the money handled by the department should be lent out in numerous instances to men who are in quite an independent position, and in a position to borrow from any lending institution in the Dominion. If the department's money, is intended for gentlemen such as these, I think it is time some inquiry was instituted. It is little wonder that there are so many disappointed borrowers about when it must be quite, evident to most, people concerned that thousands of pounds have gone in the wrong direction, or, should I say, lent to .the wrong parties..
