MANGERE PUNDKEEPER.
Sir,--Notwithstanding Mr.'• J. 8. Montgomerie's assertions to the contrary,. I think the ratepayers of Mangere will give the Manukau County, Council credit for full and sufficient reason in effecting a change in the office of poundkeeper at Mangere. As to the* reduction of thr remuneration of the caretaker of the Mangere Central Public Hall from £15 to £5 per annum, which Mr. Montgomeria evidently regards as an' injustice, that, too, will commend itself to the ratepayer! as a step in the right direction, for it it , doubtful if the revenue from the hall during the past year has amounted to as much as £5, while it is certain that the revenue of the Mangere riding ban to make good . for the deficiency between receipts and expenditure in the hall account; and the caretaker's pay. is not the whole of the • outgoings. As a matter of fact, economy has Been effected by both changes, though Mr. Montgomerie attributes them to victimisation. If the new hall at Mangere East does not pay its way, the ratepayers in its vicinity will be rated to meet the deficiency; why should they also be rated to pay the Central Hall caretaker £15 per annum when £5 would be good pay for what he has to do and somebody else would be glad of the job at that figure ?
