NEW SETTLERS ARRIVE.
LARGE DRAFT BY TAINUI.
FOUR MORE SHIPS COMING.
TOTAL OF ABOUT 1700.
Of the 554 passengers brought to Auckland on Saturday by the Taimii 315 are assisted immigrants coming to New Zealand under the Government scheme. There were also 38 domestics who came out in charge of Sister Shirley. They lost one of their number at Colon, Panama, who had to enter the hospital there. She will be brought on by a following boat. A further party of 20 public school boys also arrived. Sixteen remain on farms in the province, while the remainder have positions awaiting them in the South Island. These boys are of a particularly fine type. The reception of the newcomers was in the hands of the Under-Secretary of Immigration, Mr. H. D. Thomson whose arrangements were complete for despatching everyone to their destinations. Of the total, 123 remain in the Auckland province, while the remaining 192 left for the South by special train last evening. The distribution in detail of the newcomers is as follows:—
About 1700 immigrants are expected to arrive at Auckland within a little over a month. The Athenic and Rimutaka arrive on November 23, and the Ruapehu on December 7, the three boats accounting for about 1000 new settlers. On December 16 the Pakeha is expected. Special arrangements have been made to fit this boat for the passage of 700 immigrants who cannot be accommodated by the ordinary service.
