ALLEGED SLANDER ACTION.
THE PLAINTIFF NON-SUITED.
A claim for £200 damages for alleged slander was "heard before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, plaintiff being George A. Denning (Mr. Martelli), and defendant Mra. G. Milliner (Mr. Johnstone), both of Northcote.
Plaintiff alleged that defendant had made the statement, "Your father has been in prison," to plaintiff's sons, in the hearing of other persons. Mr. Johnstone denied that the words had ever been used, and stated that if they had, there were no grounds for using them.
Mr. Hunt: WelL lis not that <3nough ? Mr. Martelli x We consider the words were defamatory. Mr. Hunt: It has been stated pablioly that the man has never been in gaol, and his character is therefore vindicated. This is a storm in a teacup, and yet yoa want £200 damages. To say that a man has been in prison does not necessarily mean that he has committed a crim<s„
Mr. Martelli: That is the conclusion drawn from such a remark.
Mr. Hunt: I go to prison twice a weekMr. Martelli: Then I concludo that you have committed a crime, your Worship. Mr. Hunt: Oh, no, I havo not Plaintiff was non-suited, each party being ordered to pay their own costs.
