GREAT SOUTH ROAD WORK.

HIGHWAYS BOARD INQUIRIES.

The Manukau County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Air. F. M. Waters, presiding. A letter was received from the No. 2 District Highways Council concerning the formation and construction of the Great South Koad. The letter stated that it had been decided that the Great South itoad from the Otahuhu Borough to the Franklin County boundary should be constructed under the "hot-mix" process. It was suggested that all the local bodies should combine, and that the Highways Board would purchase plant, which could be hired out to the local bodies. The letter also asked that the estimates for the construction works for the year ended March 31 be submitted as soon as Eossible. The matter was left in the ands of the chairman. It was stated that the question of finance would have to be considered by ratepayers. The council was also informed that Iho Highways Board had decided that it would be a condition of the approval of the expenditure of the board's money that all bituminous work should be carried out under the supervision of experienced men. A further letter asked the council to furnish a return showing the character and capacity of all additional plant required by the council in connection with the main highways programme. The leveer was received, it being considered impossible at present to give such a return. The report of the engineer. Mr. 0. R. Pease, showed that considerable repairing work had been done on roads in the various ridings during the month. Owing to the wet weather the work in several places had been interfered with. The new crasher and elevator was being fixed in the East Tamaki quarry, and work would be started in a few days. The engineer reported that building permits to the value of £,5854 had been issued during the month. A memorandum was received from the Department of Lands and Survey statins that the Crown lands ranger had agreed that an area of 5A acres alongside the New Zealand Dairy Association's property at East Tamaki should be transferred from the East Tamaki recreation reserve to the Crown. The council agreed to the commissioner's request that it have the necessary survey made.
