THE EXPORT OF KAURI.
DECISION AS TO LIMITS. TIMBER FROM OLD LOGS, Representations have been made to the Government on the subject of the export of kauri timber, and careful inquiry has been made by the Forestry Department. The present annual permitted export of kauri is 500,000 super feet, and the Government does not propose to allow that quota to be increased in respect of timber cut from recently felled kauri trees.
It-has, however, been proved to the satisfaction of the Government that,a large quantity of kauri logs cut in past years and lying in creeks and rivers on trie west coast of the North Island, especially at Hokianga and Whangape, are deteriorating in condition, and that the timber from such logs cannot be profitably .used on the New Zealand market in competition with timber, cut on the east coast areas. For that reason .the Govern-, ment has -decided to allow the export of kauri timber cut from such logs from the west coast ports of the North Island to the extent of 2,500;000 super feet for the current year; 2,000,000 super feet for 192526; and 1,000,000 super feet for 1926-27. It must be clearly understood, says an official statement that no increase in the quota of 500,000 ft. for recently cut kauri timber will be allowed, whether or not the export quota for the deteriorating logs on the west coast is used in any year or not.
