"POPPY DAY" APPEAL.

VICTIMS OF THE WAR. TO-DAY'S COLLECTION. The claims of those who have suffered as a result of the great war will be brought prominently before Aucklanders to-day, when the annual collection in connection with Anzac Day commemoration will be held. "Poppy Day" has become a recognised feature of Auckland's yearly honouring of the dead, and although badges have had to be substituted this year for the symbolic flower, as a result of a disagreement between the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association and headquarters, it is hoped that citizens will extend the same generous support to the appeal as on other occasions. • Complete arrangements have been made for the sale of badges in Queen Street and in the suburbs, and the request is made that all purchasers of badges will wear them on Anzac Day.

Before it was known that no supplies of poppies would be available for sale in Auckland, the lady members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade made between 1600 and 1800 blooms, and. permission having been granted by the Mayoress and by the Returned Soldiers' Association, the poppies will be on sale at the brigade's stall at the foot of Wellesley Street. The veterans of not only the great war, but of bygone wars, will benefit through the generosity of citizens to-day, as 65 per cent, of the money will be devoted to relievo unemployed exsoldiers during the winter months, 35 per cent, to the Veterans' Home, and 5 per cent, to the war widows of France.
