LAND FOR SELECTION.

WAIMANA DISTRICT AREA. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN' COHRESPPKDENT.] WAIMANA. Monday. Applications will close at the 'Auckland Land Office on April 28 for the selection of 28,583 acres, situated in the Waimana, Urewera, and Ahikereua survey districts. Most of these sections have a frontage to the recently-formed dray road along the Waimana River, while a few will be connected with it by short lengths of bye roads. A telephone line has been built nearly up to the last farm, and is connected with the Waimana exchange. The areas of the sections range from 688 to 3472 acres. A new departure, so far as this district is concerned, in the laying out of section boundaries, has been adopted by surveyors in the cutting up of the local Crown lands. The section lines are cow laid off along the tops of ridges, generally following the watershed which encloses all the drainage area round one stream. These lines are not only a delight to bush, farmers. and fencers, but make it possible on suitable soil to grow a live hedge. Formerly the practise was to run straight lines on the map from point to point, leaving the unfortunate selector a lifetime of -work and worry in trying to erec<. and maintain fences running up creek beds or along steep slipping faces.
