COMMENT FROM PARIS.
"MOST VENTURESOME STEP."
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Heed. 10.15 p.m.) « PARIS. Mar. 19.
The Echo De Paris expresses chagrin at the abandonment of the Singapore base. It describes it as the most venturesome measure yet taken by Mr. Mac Donald's Cabinet.
. Referring to the recent statement by Mr. Bruce that Australia, in case of need, would seek the conclusion of an alliance for the purpose of securing safeguards which the Motherland cannot grant, and alluding to an alliance with the United States, the journal says: "The United States would not regard unfavourably the construction of a naval base which would help her to retain the Philippines." The paper adds: " The lesson is that if the British Labour Cabinet shows itself incapable of providing defence for the Dominions, it will, with all the more reason, refuse to participate in a continental system of defence."
