PROHIBITION DEFIED.
TROOPS GLEAN-UP CITY.
EVILS IN PITTSBURG.

The " clean-up" movement in American cities has been extended to Pittsburg where mounted State troopers rode through the street and closed 600 • saloons ■which were ostensibly selling non-alcoholic beverages. This action was taken by order of Governor Pinchot, who 'j'fcned a statement condemning [Pittsburg conditions. He declared that lawlessness flourished there, that the saloons were openly and boldly defying the Constitution of the United States, that illegal beer, whisky, and other liquors were being sold boldly, and that in many instances poisonous beverages were dispensed. The Governor added that drunken men were found all over the city. Federal prohibition enforcement and local police raids seemed to have made little impression.
The Governor threatened to keep the troopers, in the city until these evils have been eradicated. ■ ■-
