Tenders are to be called by the City Council for the supply of ten new tramcars, a portion of the 20 new cars in, eluded in the authorised programme foij which loan arrangements have already been made.

Reporting to the council last evening, the manager of the tramways department, Mr. A. E. Ford, stated that ife would be necessary to order the ten cars shortly, as increasing demands had to bo met, and it was necessary to ensure a supply of cars being delivered at regular intervals following the completion of the, six now under construction.

In connection with the tenders now being called ?for the supply of motor* buses to act as feeders to the trams at tha tramway termini, it was decided, on the ' recommendation of the manager of the ■:'■'■ tramway department, to stipulate an; overall minimum width of body of 7ft, 6in., to ensure the conveyance of a suffix cient number of passengers in comforts ,* To accomplish this it was agreed, on the v advice of the Finance and Legal Committee, to amend the by-laws so thai the maximum width of motor-bus bodies allowed on 'the streets be increased front 7ft. to 7ft 6in. . ; "

In reply to a remark by Mr. Bloodworth to the effect that an identical re* quest from the Coachbuilders' Associa*' tion had been declined a short time ago, Mr. Robertson, chairman of the Finance and Legal Committee, stated that fresh evidence supplied by the tramways department showed that the cause decided upon was quite essential.
