CRANE'S HEAVY LIFT.
PART OF POWER TURBINE.
A condenser shell, weighing 16£ tons and forming the base of one of the Auckland Electric Power Board's large new turbines, was unloaded from the steamer lonic at the Queen's Wharf yesterday afternoon, being hoisted out of the ship's hold by the Harbour Board's floating crane. The condenser, which is about 17ft. long and Bft. in diameter, will bo conveyed to the board's power-house on a 40-ton bogey specially constructed for the carriage of heavy weights. The Power Board already has three turbinestwo of 5000 kilowatts and one of 3000 kilowatts— operation, and ; now that the condenser has arrived the erection of the fourth and .last turbine ordered by the board will be commenced. The turbine will have a capacity of 5000 kilowatts. The services of the floating crane will be again required when the turbine arrives, for the weight of one portion of the machinery is approximately 25 tons. The total cost of the turbine is £26,000, which is £6000 less than that of each of the other 6000 kilowatt turbines, the market price having been recently reduced.
