The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has received the following cablegram frora its London office, dated February 22, regarding the Smithfield market prices:—. " Owing to the dock and cold store strike supplies are restricted and Quotations are nominal. New Zealand lamb is selling at id, and New Zealand mutton at {d per lb., higher than the prices ruling last week." X BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. TENDERS FOR SHARES. The Bank of New Zealand recently • Jim vited tenders from shareholders for 22081 new ordinary shares, tho balance of the recent issue of 760,000 representing shares upon which the option of purchase at par had not been exercised, and the fractions available through shareholders' holdings, upon which their quota was baaed, not being exact multiples of three. Tenderers at over £2 lis por share have received allotment in full; those at £2 lis have been allotted 33.32 per cent. The price of the shares allotted averaged £2 lis id per share. THE MEAT INDUSTRY. A NORMAL SEASON. The rumours of an alleged scheme for nationalising the meat industry of New Zealand which were rife a few days ago have died out completely, and if there were any real desires on the part of some of those interested in the industry to bring about an amalgamation of all the companies the statement of tho Prima Minister that he was not a Socialist must have put an end to thoir ambitions, says a Wellington paper. There is every appearance now that the output of mutton and lamb will be up to the lovol of last season. During November. December and January tho exports of mutton totalled 235,666 carcases, against 313,633 carcases in the corresponding thre« months of the na»t season showing a deorwiao of 79,967 carcases, and tho shipments of lamb totalled 758,005 carcases, against 795,154 carcases, a shrinkage of 37,149 carcases. The decreases in both cases are small and were due to the dry weather retarding the fattening of stock. The current month will see this/ deficiency more than recovered, for sheep and lambs are reported to be coming in freely. The position with regard to beef is not so satisfactory. For the three "months the exports totalled 32.214 quarters, while in .the corresponding three months in the previous season the exports amounted to 78.449 Quartors. This show? a very wide difference, a'ld whilo Abe climatic conditions experienced early in the sesaon may have had something to do with it, th© real cause is apparently that th* fat cattle »t» not now available It will bo remembered that last year the 'Wellington- Coast district was combed of cattle by a Victorian buyer, and this probably has caused a shortage, at least in this district.
