RIFLE - SHOOTING.
AKARANA CLUB. Competitions were held on Saturday afternoon at Penrose for trophies presented to th© club by' Sir George Elliot. Mr. W. Powell and Major Strang. Conditions were most baffling, and the natural difficulties of tho 800 and 900 yards ranges being increased by 'an extremely variable wind blowing, first, from the left and then from the right. Conditions were, in the opinion of the old shots, worse than those experienced on the Trentham range, and no shootist escaped without missing the target on one or two occasions. _ Captain Kretschmar created a surprise in the A section by compiling the fine ricore of 44 at the 900 yards, and securing the verdict at. a time when several men of good reputation had failed rather lamentably. Major Strong, another marksman of the old school, was a close second, and 8. Elliott was a point away, third. Results in the A section thus show how experience counts in solving the difficult problems of the long ranges. In the B and C sections, E. H. Starkey and S. G. Scarborough were successful, and each receives the usual silver spoon. The scored are as follows:— A Section (Sir George Elliot's Trophy).— G. T. Kxetschmsr, 84 at 800 yds, 44 at ooovrfß—total 78; F.
