POLICE COURT NEWS.
DRUNKEN WOMAN'S ACT. SMASHES A SHOP WINDOW. A young-looking woman of 30, Kitty Scager, was charged before Mr, F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, with having been dn\nk in Grey Street on Friday evening and with having broken a pane of glass in a Chinese shop, occupied by Wing Chong. It was stated by the police that accused, while in an intoxicated condition, went into the shop and smashed the window, and when remonstrated with said, " I will smash all your — windows." Her counsel, Mr. Blakey, said that admittedly, she was addicted to drink, but she desired to take out a prohibition, order against herself " and accept work. She had no friends to look after her. The magistrate remarked that accused had been before this Court oil six previous occasions, and had_ at one time been sentenced to three years' reformative detention at Point Halswell. When asked if anything could be done for the woman, Adjutant Gordon, of the Salvation Army, looked despairing, and said she would hestitate rto take the accused into the home on account of her possible influence on the girls there. The adjutant promised, however, to do her best for toe woman, upon which the accused was fined 10s on the charge of drunkenness, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and ordered to come up for sentence upon the remaining charge within a period of six months.
