RAILWAY RETIREMENTS.
MR. MITCHELL'S RETENTION. CRITICISM OF MINISTER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Monday. A local member of the Railway Officers' Institute stated to-day that the Minister's announcement concerning the retention of the services of Mr. Mitchell, district traffic manager at Christchurch, would be received with dissatisfaction in the service. It was regrettable, he said, that the Minister should depart from his general policy by retaining a traffic manager, when thero were many young officers, capable of filling the position with credit. Now that they had a Minister prepared to enforce the principle of retirement after 40 years' service, the institute considered that he should plough a straight furrow unless the officer, without doubt, was essential.
