MANY GRASS FIRES.

BRIGADES KEPT BUSY. NO SERIOUS DAMAGE. The hot, dry weather was responsible for many grass and scrub fires during the week-end. The Mount Albert brigade received three calls on Saturday afternoon. The first was to a gorse fire in Reimer's Avenue. Besides several houses, the pavilion at Eden Park was endangered. The fire was subdued with some trouble. A more serious outbreak at 2.10 p.m., led to the brigade being called to Elizabeth Street, Edendale, where 15 acres of gorse and grass was alight. Three hours were occupied in quelling this outbreak, which, owing to its extent, had to be attacked from five different quarters. Five houses and a shed were threatened, but the brigade succeeded in saving these, the shed alone being badly scorched. A further call at 5.5 p.m. was received to Arabi Street, off Balmoral Road, where a grass area of about 1£ acres was on fire. This was quickly quelled. Yesterday morning, the brigade was again called to a gorse fire at Elizabeth Street. This was extinguished without difficulty

Three calls to scrub fires were also received on Saturday afternoon by the Point Chevalier brigade. One call, soon after fcne o'clock, (came from. Johnsosa Street, and the others, which occurred' soon after 5 p.m., were from Miller Street and Moa Road. No buildings were damaged. The City brigade attended three more grass fires yesterday. A call at 10.15 a.m. was to the top of Hepburn Street, while the second outbreak occurred about 3.30 p.m. near the Grey Lynn terminus. Another gorse fire near the old StoiKi Jug was extinguished after some time by the City and Point Chevalier brigades. The Mount Eden brigade quelled a gorse .fire in Marnden Avenue, off Dominion Road, on Saturday afternoon. A rubbish fire in William Street, off Dominion Road, was extinguished yesterday afternoon.
