PEAT FIRES RAGING.
ABOUT 400 ACRES SWEPT* SETTLERS' TRYING TIME. BRIDGES AND FENCES BURNED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MOI&I3NSVILLE. Saturday. The fires are still burning in the peat in and around Tauhei. The block of 600 acres, recently purchased by the Druid's Order, has been burning for some time. There are about 400 acres burned up to the present, including bridges across large drains and also fences. The manager has partially saved a block of about 150 acres by ploughing around it. The main bridge on Sand's Road, Waikato County has been in danger for some time and settlers have had an anxious time beating out the fire to save the structure. Several men employed by the Thames Valley Power Board who have been constructing lines in Chat district have been smoked out from their camps, and have had to remove to a point of safety. FIRES AROUND ROTORUA. PROPERTY HOLDERS ANXIOUS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] EOTORUA. Sunday. Fires are burning all round this district. A number of minor scrub outbreaks have been promptly suppressed. There is some anxiety on the part of suburban property holders. The heat is very oppressive.
