TE KJJITL MEETING. TINOKAHA wins THE CUP. .ORISS ABBEY'S BIG SURPRISE The T» Kuiti Racing Club held its annual race meeting at Te Kumi on Saturday. The weather was very hot, but there was a large attendance, the special trainn from Auckland, Frankton Junction and Taumarunui bringing many visitors. The track was very hard and fast and some smart times were recorded. The eight events all attracted good-sized fields and the racing throughout the day was very keen. The Farewell Handicap, which resulted in a half-head victory for York Abbey, in particular, giving rise to a highly-exciting finish. There Tsas one incident in connection with the racing- that caused no little excitement, that Doing the surprise victory of Criss Abbey in the Otorohanga Handicap. -The Quin Abbey gelding was the rank outsider in a field of twelve, and paid one of the biggest dividends that has been returned in the Auckland district for some time. The Te Kuiti Cup was won by Mr. L. Bater's aged gelding Tinokaha, who put a break on the field in the first few furlongs, and was never afterwards headed, though he only got home by a neck. This made his third victory in a country cup event this season, he having won both tho Taumarunui Cup and the Te Awamntu Cup in December last. The management of the meeting left little room for complaint, the arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. L. C. Harton working out very smoothly. The president, Mr. A. F. Howarth, and the vice-presidents, Mesrss. L. Jacob, J. F. Vercoe and H. Rothery were very attentive to the wants of visitors, and the successful running of the meeting was in no small measure clue to their efforts. Mr. A. Wilson was the stipendiary steward in attendance, and during the afternoon he called the stewards together on a couple of occasions to deal with incidents in connection with the racing. An inquiry was held into the running of Sir Burnett in the Cup and in view of the fact that the evidence disclosed that the horse was hard to ride the explanation tendered by the trainer and jockey was accepted. E. Tuohey, the rider of Major Abbey in the Otorohanga Handicap, was also before the stewards, and was cautioned for crossing Lord Loppy before being the required two lengths in front. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £23,966 10s, compared vsith £22,159 last year, vhen the meeting was held in conjunction with the Taumarunui meeting on the same course. The investments thus showed an increase of £1807 103. Details of the Racing. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Of £100, second £20, third £10; 6 fur. MULTINI. J.
