' At the Magistrate's Court yesterday a youth whose name was suppressed by order of the Court pleaded guilty to stealing four cheques amounting to £45 lis 7d« Accused had been sent to a butter factory for his uncle's cheque, which was handed to him. He returned and asked for some oil, and while this was being procured took the cheques from the milk cans. He forged endorsements and cashed the cheques with various tradesmen, and finally took passage by steamer that night. He was apprehended in Wellington. The magistrate admitted the accused to probation for, two years, restitution to be made. The magistrate commented strongly on the freedom and lack of care with which tradespeople throughout the Dominion cashed cheques presented to them.
