MAORI GIRL DROWNED.
DISREGARDED WARNING. [By telegram.— CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGABEI. Saturday. A drowning ; accident took ... place at Moengawahihe. yesterday, ; the - victim being a 14-year-old Maori girl' named - Ellen Herewini. Following upon "an ilness last winter, and • a fall' from a horse - three days ago, the deceased had ; been advised not' to indulge in swimming, but yesterday afternoon she joined a party of fellowpupils of the Te Horo native school and was swimming in- the Kaikou River, when she suddenly sank. She was rescued in about five minutes, and was taken ashore, where artificial respiration was resorted to, but without avail. An inquest took place this afternoon before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., and a verdict. of accidental drowning was returned, a rider - being added commending f the action of two Maori lads in endeavouring to save the life of deceased.
