BOXING.

PROFESSIONAL LIGHT-WEIGHT SMITH TO MEET VOL-AIRE. The boxing carnival which will be held at the Town Hall to-morrow evening, under the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association, is creatine widespread interest. The chief event will be a professional lightweight contest between Eugene Volaire, the French boxer, who has been rtasading in Brisbane for some years, and Stewart Smith. th'o ex-Australian, who has made Auckland his headquarters for a considerable time. Volaire. who is a veteran of .the ring, has a great record as a boxer. His recfent form shows that ho still possesses the science and hitting ability that earned him fame in his class. He is essentially a _ forceful boxer, who carries the fight 'to his opponent all the time at high speed. Smith, who also Iras a great record of successes to his credit, including victories in New Zealand over J. Koenan, F. Brock, B. Shaw, and P. Demsky, is also a hardhitting boxer who keeps his opponent busy in defence. A meeting between two such rugged exponents of the art should provide a particularly fast and exciting contest. The bout is schedued for 15 rounds, and a purse* of £150 has been provided by the association. In addition to the professional event, a number of amateur bouts have been arranged. Some of the cleverest aspirants for amateur boxing honours in the Auckland district have been matched, and thia section of the programme, is bound to rove highly popular.
