WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

NO MORE AT HAMILTON.

HOMES TOO COSTLY.

BALANCE OF LOAN RETURNED

[BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J HAMILTON. Friday. Tho Hamilton Borough Council has decided to erect no more workers' homes and ; to return the balance of the £10,000 loan 92300) to the Government. Eight dwellings have been erected, at a total cost of approximately £7700. Of these, two are leased and the remainder are let to weekly tenant®. , . In stating the reasons why the .Legal and Finance Committee recommended the course stated, the Mayor, Mr. J. B. Fow, informed the council last evening that on the present cost of the houses it would be necessary to cliarp* 30s per week rent to cover interest and sinking fund, and with a falling market the council might have to consider revising rents from time to time. It was thought further that with the more liberal allowances now being made, the Government could fill the function of financing house-building better than the council. The committee's report was adopted.
