BEER AS "VERMIN."

NORTH CANTERBURY HERD.

DESTRUCTION ADVOCATED.

[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT. J CHRI6TCHURCH, Friday. The removal of the protection on deer was discussed by the council of tne North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Mr. E. F. Stead said that the society should have thinned # out deer, in North Canterbury years ago. The last time that they had figures regarding the Poulter River herd it was estimated that there were 150 deer, there, These deer were increasing at. the rate of 75 a year, and only six were to be shot. In country like that, where there was no control, the society should send in stalkers to shoot out the annual increase. Mr. Caffin said that the Poulter River herd should be declared vermin and be wiped out. The Nelson herd had oome into the Poulter River herd from the north and was a menace to it. The question was referred to the Deer Committee for consideration.
