PREPARATION OF THE PLANS.
IPUBLIO APPEAL FOR FUNDS.
It is expected that the War Memorial Committee will be in a position to call for tenders for the new structure toward the end of the present year, and allowing a period of five or six .months to those desirous of tendering the building should be actually started by this time next year. Discussing this matter yesterday, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, stated that the preparation of the plans in accordance with the' winning design was well in hand by the architects, Messrs. Grierson, Aimer and Draffin. When completed, the plans would be publicly exhibited. .... ... i The question of the final public appeal for funds would be considered at a meeting of the committee on . Wednesday, when the treasurer would report as to the amount already subscribed. This appeal would probably take place some time in October. Mr. Gunson said it was probable a further £50.000 would be required from the public, to whom no- appeal had as yet been made. The committee had preferred to complete the personal canvass over a wide field before proceeding with the final appeal to the public, and this canvass had produced most gratifying results.
