The home team was depleted, tight of the best men beink down with influenza. The game was played on a heavy ground, and was not inspiring. V THE WANGANUI UNION. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN / CORRESPONDENT. - ) ' WANG-ANUI, 'Wednesday. ,At a meeting of the Rugby Union last night the question of assenting the land foe helping Bob Whito«de, of Auckland, was considered. It was pointed out that Whiteside was ft. name to conjure with in the old days of Rugby, alth6ugh it was unknown to present-day . players. It - was decided to vote £2 2s toward the Auckland fund.

A matter of. great interest to Mam Trunk players was discussed. It was resorted that three Taihape players, including Bellis, had failed to take their place in the representative team selected ' to. play against Marlborough, and had remained at : home to compete 'in an important cup fixture. Dr. Adams, one of the selectors,' stressed th» seriousness of the offence of placing a cup fixture before the honour of the union. It was time this kind of thing was definitely stopped. Another selector said that no rea son was ascribed for the failure of the play ers concerned to come to Wanganui, and it caused a big difficulty in replacing thw men at the eleventh hour. He favoured th« selection of Wanganui players only m future if. sub-unions treated representative honours so lightly. It was eventually do cided that sub-unions be notified that m future if any player picked for any representative fixture fails to play,. and unless a satisfactory reason is advanced, the selectors be instructed that they.have the option of not again selecting the player in question for any representative fixture. It was reported that nothing further had been heard from the Auckland Union con-" cerning the proposed visit of the Northern junior representatives. , Such a visit is being eagerly , awaited locally. • - \ INTER- COLLEGIATE MATCH. WELLINGTON V. SOUTHLAND. NORTHERNERS' VICTORY.. ■ ; [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION, j ' , WELLINGTON. Wednesday. • Wellington met and defeated' Southland on a heavy ground to-day, in the presence of 5000 spectators. The match on the who la was not up to representative standard, although bright flashes of play helped to give incident to an otherwise uninteresting game. Wellington kicked off against the sun, and for . a time Southland pressed hard. Wellington backs, by a series'of passing rushes, retaliated, however, and a cross kick ,by Porter caught the Southern backs out of position. Swain, who was following up fast, picked up and dived over. M. Nicholls converted. ; Almost immediately afterwards J, Oushton, while going down to\a forward rush, was overrun and. on regaining his feet, shot through the Wellington rearguard. After making a good run, he passed to "flute, to Claret, who scored beneath the posts. Agnew • converted. The Wellington pack, headed by Thomas and Swain, swept down the field, and near the line the farmer was obstructed. The referee awarded a freo kick, which failed. Soon afterwards Wellington forwards, with Pringlo in the van, again carried all before them, and Swain terminated a movement by sporing near the corner. The kick failed. After a spell of play in neutral territory, Swain again broke away, and running from the twenty-five line , scored a fine try. Southland retaliated immediately. The Maroon forwards followed up a kick out, and from a rash White, with a fine solo effort, dribbled the ball over the line and scored. The score at half-time was:

Wellington .. .. .. 14 1 Southland .. .. .. 8 Southland attacked for a brief period at the beginning of the second spell, but a loose forward rush by Wellington saw the Maroons defending. From tha ruck Dancn picked up. and making a *ood run, passed to Ropers, who ran round behind the posts. M. Nicholls converted. Wellington scored again almost immediately. Porhor checked a Southland forward rush and shot through the Southern forwards, where he passed to M. Nicholls, and the latter ran in unopposed. Ho converted his own try. Southland forwardsattacked vigorously for a period, but passing rushes ny Wellington backs brought play back to half-way, vheie from a scrum tho Nicholl brothers sent Tilyard away. The last-named, after running nicely, passed to. Duncan, who dashed over. Porter's kick failed. There was» a swell of bad back play by both sides, with Tilyard. Svenson, Hazlett, and Cosgrove as chief offenders. Southland's next score „oam» through a good movement by Bell, who kicked past the Wellington backs, beat them to the ball, and parsed infield to Black, who crossed 'the line. Agnew converted. Duncan _ burst through from the ruck soon after a kick-out and transferred to Rogers, who passed to Thomas. The last-named scored at the corner. The kick failed. The Southland backs now attempted to throw the ball about, but they could not combine effectively. and their efforts c&me to nothing. Their forwards, however, wore playing a great game, and during the last 20 minutes had the bettor ,of the exchange, although Wellington backs broke through frequently. Succoss at last, crowned .the efforts of the MaroOns, and just on time Black crossed the line as the result of a forward rush Agnew converted, and the game ended: ■Wellington . . . . . an Southland .. . .
