WHITE HORSE CUP TOURNEY. WHANGAREI BEAT RODNEY. PIAKO NOW LEADING. The White Horse Cup hockey turnament ■was continued yesterday at the Remuera grounds under good weather conditions. The surprise of the day was the defeat of the holders of . the cup, Rodney, at the hands of Whangarei. The game was an even one, ]>ut Rodney failed to score further through poor circle work. The Whangarei forwards played a good, combining game, and, well supported. by the tear division, made some really good movements. Whangarei won by two £oals to one. 4 An < even match was that between Man-gawai-Albertland and Franklin, which was won by the former team by two goals to one. Mangawai proved just a little too good for their opponents. Piako defeated a weakened Thames team by four goals to nil. v The position of the teams is as follows : —Piako, 5 points; Rodney, 4; Whangarei, 3; Mangawai-Albertland, 3 ; Franklin, 2; Thames, 1. RODNEY V. WHANGAREI. Both sides took an aggressive turn in tne initial stages and the fpaco was nt once strenuous. Play was delayed through on (injury to Tovoy, who retired. On resuming, Rodney pressed a couple of times, relief being brought 'by a free hit. The Rodney left wing had a clear shot, but infringed, the _ ball . returning to midfiold. Again the whitas cam« back, till Massey cot & chance for Whangarei. but fell when in a promising position. Poor shoot- ! "iff a little later lost another opportunity. Rodney brought the ball along ; the right wing, though sound defensive work countered the movements. Wliungarei qtUcked along the centre and Hanna:n, obtaining possession, made no mistake with the shot. Rodney lost another chancy through weakness on the left wing. There wan ft tendency to obstruction "on ' both sides. A quick Whangarei attack causer! Rodney anxiety, but the forwards lost control of the ball in the circle. Rodney' had the better of the resulting movements until half-time. Sudden attacks by <*ach sidle characterised tho opening play, till Whangarei brought the ball along the right, and a scramble took place in the goal mouth. The ball went out lo Tupp, who» was waiting on the circle edge, and he shot a good goal. Rodney were roused by the reverse., but the forwards were shooting wide. Whangarei conceded a penalty corner, and play centred in the twenty-five. Too hard hitting spoiled Rodney's chances, and slow circle work threw away a possible chance. Play was in Rodney's favour and a . good run along the right and th« following centre gave Simmonson a chance, and! he scored at close range. The race livened up and each side made good advances. Whangarei conceded a corner, and lino play was followed by Xodnoy keeping up the advantage, Whangarei made a breakaway, and tho ball hung in neutral territory. Sloane sent the ball over tho line in saving, and from the resulting corner Whatigarai cleared. Play, was of "an exciting nature till the call of time, though no further score resulted. Tho game ended: Whangarei .. ? Rodney . ' ..1 Mr. R. C. Avery was referee.

Play swung in Franklin's favour for a while, till the opposing forwards came away and nearly scored from a scramble. Both sides were hitting the ball about freely and Mangawai again assumed a dangerous attitude and a snot by Grant was successful. Evfen cplanr .followed 'the bully, and Franklin kept things busy. Halftime sounded without further score. •Franklin took control from the bully, working play to the twenty-five, but the defence was sound. Mangawai forwards took the ball up-field and undecided. play followed, each side having a fair share of the attack. The Mangawai. forwards hemmed down their opponents, till the Franklin vanguard improved the position by reng cross-hitting. Eventually Postlewaito scored. The bouncing ball was beating the forwards, however, and several opportunities were lost .by each side. The final scores were: Mangawai-Albertland .. .. $ Fxanklin . - . . «. . 1 Mr. F. Nicho'ison was referee. PIAKO V.' THAMES. Midfield play followed the bully till Pink;got away, their attack ending by a shot going high. The Thames forwards brought the ball into a good position, . but failed in the finishing touches. The Piako halves sent their forwards away fend the first score came shortly after.
