RIFLE CLUBS.
Sir,—The remarks of Sir Francis Bell in reply to a request made by a deputation representing rifle clubs are, to say the least, somewhat surprising. He is quoted as saying that rifle clubs are dangerous. In what they are dangerous is not clearly stated. Apparently, he fears; that gangs of burglars may prey on us, armed; with rifles. He evidently labours under the delusion that it is as easy to form a rifle club as it is to form a football or cricket club. He loses sight of the fact also, that rifle clubs are directly , under.'■ the supervision of both military and police authorities. A list of names of members . has to be sent into the musketry officer in charge of; the area in which the club is formed. The : list is », passed on to the police thus preventing dangerous" ]•' persons from -/becoming/ members of .;/ rifle clubs. Every rifleman has to register his rifle, just as the owner of a sporting gun does, and is equally liable should he fail to register, which is quite right. « : G. ;H. Hughes, / Chairman Auckland Rifle/' Assn.
