AN AMERICAN AMENDE.

By Telegraph—Pre»« Awoclation—Copyright. (Received 7.30 v.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. March 20. The Secretary of State, Mr. C. E. Hughes, in a speech at Newhavert in December, referred to changes made in British capital ships after* the Washington Conference. Upon representations by the British Ambassador, Sir Auckland Gcddes, he issued a statement to-day correcting the impression that his remarks had made. Mr. Hughes said that in a considerable number of British ships bu!g?s had been fitted and the elevation of turret guns increased and turret-loading arrangements modified to conform with the increased elevation. Mr. Hughes now explains that in making this statement he relied upon specific information obtained from the Navy Department, which believed that it j was correct. The British Government has ' informed the State Department categorici ally that no alterations have been made j in the elevation of turret guns in any British capital ships since they were first > placed in commission, and further that jno additional deck protection has been I provided since June, 1922, the date of the | Washington Treaty.
