GROUP EMIGRATION.
SCHEMES FOR AUSTRALIA. LONDON, March 8. During the debate in the House of Commons on unemployment Sir Montague Barlow, Minister for Labour, said that the *ork of making agreements with the ominjons for Empire settlement was proTWjlo'* 8I ? oothl and rapid!v. The Government hoped to send to Western Australia young men with finanf>o backing in groups of from 20 to w, under proper supervision, to establish tH" to tne number of £000 or 6000 The Minister expressed the opinion that much might be done along the lines of •asociational emigration, so that big centres might start from village settleBlent, as under the " New Devon ' scheme, it was through such that he looked for development. , The schemes in view would provide machinery by which settlers of both sexes and ♦ !.• all classes could be included, and something like complete units sent from the home country. He hoped that something '8"t be done on the lines of Empire settlement to help the 200,000 unemployed former service men.
