"UNION BLUNDERED."
SUSPENSION OF LAWTON. AN UNDOUBTED AMATEUR. LONDON, Feb. , 24. "Lawton acted in an honourable and sportsmanlike manner. He could •; not have done otherwise," says the Sporting Life Rugby expert, who reveals that when the Oxford Union was discussing the status of Dominion players, in view of the manifesto of the English Rugby Union, Lawton himself drew attention to the , doubt existing regarding his own case, ' and asked for a ruling. , • The expert adds: "The Rugby Union is completely out of touch with present con'ditions, and is persistently treading on dangerous ground. If Australia regards as amateur the game played by the Sydney University team we have no right to interfere. "The Union has blundered into an'unenviable position, till the governing authority been forced by public opinion to rescind its suspension of an amateur whose status should not have been questioned." ■
