HAMS AND BACON.

SHORTAGE IN THE DOMINION.

EXPOBT AND EEDUCED OUTPUT.

There is a considerable shortage of hams and bacon in the Dominion. The position is not so acute as it was during the Christmas rush, but some time must elapse before normal supplies become available. 1 ..'•■■'"■*:•

Discussing the position yesterday, a merchant stated that there had been a heavy export of hams to Australia in October and November, when there wevo prospects of the local* market becoming glutted. Bacon and frozen pork were also exported in considerable quantities to England. In addition, the largest bacon company in New Zealand practically suspended operations and supplies to the market were greatly restricted .in consequence. The '_ company in question was now operating on a .limited scale and the smaller curers were being kept extremely busy endeavouring to meet the shortage. The pigs were in the country, added the speaker, but the stocks : of hams and bacon had been so depleted '■ that some time would elapse before they could be built up to normal dimensions.
