DIRECT MAILS.
Sir, —The usual formula, " lor specially addressed correspondence only," appears as a rule when referring to mails leaving via Cape Horn or Panama, inferring, I assume, that correspondents using those routes take the responsibility as to early or late delivery at Home. Nevertheless, I think that more discretion should be used . •by tho post office authorities!, who are, or should . be, in a position to know tho steaming qualities of the boats carrying His Majesty's mails. It was only a short time ago a boat, advertised to carry mails under the above formula, left the Auckland wharf (the actual date was November 3), and after a "record" passage, landed her mails at Southampton" on December 24. This is absurd. Mails should, not be put aboard such craft. A Shaw, Savill cargo boat leaving a week after this boat beat her to Southampton by :two days. The' Frisco mail, despatched twelve days later, reached England approximately five days before the arrival of this flyer. ; Steam/.
