ALLIANCE STRIKE BALLOT.
EXPEDIENCY QUESTIONED. THE TIME NOT OPPORTUNE. [by telegraph.—own CORRESPONDENT.] CHKISTCHTJKCH, Thursday. Some diversity of opinion as to the expediency of the ballot being taken by the New Zealand Alliance of Labour on the question of ceasing work as a pro-test against the reduction of wages is said to exist among Christchtarch unions which are. affiliated with the alliance. On the one hand there are some unions which hold the opinion that something of the nature of a "demonstration in force" is necessary to prevent, if possible, further reductions in wages, their contention being that the cost of commodities has not be,en reduced to such an extent as to warrant any further decreases in wages. Other unions hold the view that the time is not opportune for action such as that contemplated by the Alliance of Labour. In one instance it is understood that, the members of a union affiliated with the alliance have been "" strongly advised not to exercise their votes on the ballot at all. There is a possibility, however, that the votes of seamen, watersiders, freezing works employees, and possibly of some other unions, may be sufficient to cam* the ballot.
