FOUR-ACRE LAND SLIP.
EFFECT OF EARTHQUAKE. . WAIKAEI RIVER DAMMED.- * RAILWAY LINE ENDANGERED. } [B2 TELEG&APH- — ' COEBKSPONDEKT.j CKRISTCHUSCH, Wednesday. fc The work of clearing the landslip at 1 Greta, North Canterbury, :which was - caused by the earthquake on Christmas : Day, is "still proceeding: The slip is t about four acres in extent, a huge piece of i country sliding down near the Greta railway station. . . Some danger to the railway line re--1 suited, because the slip completely i dammed th© Waikari River, causing a big i volume of water "to bank up. A clear- . ance is being made by means of catting a drain through the blockage in order to give an outlet to the river. Tho water will have to be let away gradually at first, > but it is hoped that the channel will be completed in' about a fortnight's time, and afterwards the stream will probably carry away a good deal of the dflbris in its course. So far it has not been found necessary to hold up ; . railway traffic. '.;' . j
