THE LONDON MARKETS. BANK OF ENGLAND -RETURNS.' Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5,40 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 17. The Bank of England returns for the week ended August 17, as compared -with those for the week ended August 10, are as follows :—

RATES OF DISCOUNT. Short loans. 1J- ppr cent., the same as last week; three months' bills, 2}- per cent., aa against 2 per ccnt. laet week. FOREIGN EXCHANGES. Tho following rates on foroigxi exchanges are current to-day, as compared with the cabled quotations on August Id and par:—

The Bradford wool market shovre a holiday tone. • Quotations are unchanged. — CEREALS. PULSE AND SUGAR. Wheat cargoes ara inactive, with consumers holding off in view of the proximity of American supplies and the home harvest. Parcels are in fair demand at lower rates. A fair trade is being done on epot. Australian, ex ship, is quoted at 55s '3d. Flour is quiet Australian, ox 6tore, is quoted at SSs fid. Oats are dull; New Zealand A 345, B 3&s. Barley is quiet. The nominal value of Australian for shipment is 40s to 45s c.i.f. Peas are alow; New Zealand bluee. on spot 360s to 400s; maples for shipment, 97s 6d c.i.f. Beans are unchanged. MARKET REPORTS. FRUIT AND PRODUCE. There was little change on the Auckland city markets yesterday. Sydney fruit, which arrived early in ihe week by the Manuka, eold at good prices, passion fruit bring dear. Island orangea were dearer than last week, and bananas also sold at high prices. Lemons were of. poor quality on the average and were difficult to quit. Fresh eggs were in large supply,. both hen .and duck eggs again selling at identical prices. Poul- ■ try came to hand only in small quantitiee. FRUIT. A fair demand was experienced for Delicious apples, which sold at prices ranging from 16s 6d to 18s 6d per case. Doughertys realised from lis to 13s; Stunners, medium, from 9s to 10s 6d» and l>est quality from 12s to 12e 6d; Pigeonettei, 10s 6d to 12a. In cookers, Munros sold from 10s 6d to 11a 6d, and Ballarata at similar prices. Jonathans. of poor duality, sold from 9s to 9a 6d. and better quality at lis. Among pears, Nellis sold up to 16s 6d; over-ripe Colea, from 8s to lis; cookers, 10a Gd to lis. Lemons were dull of sale, and were, of poor quality; some lines sold at lower prices than wero realised last -week., Sydney mandarins sold well at prices ranging from 24s to 30s, and Sydney pineapples .t'rom 20s to 253. bjdney passion fruit was scarce and dear. Belling Between 20s and 28s. Island oranges fetched, from 20s to 21s. Poorman oranges, sma'l inferior kind, realised from 4s to 5b 6d; better quality, up to Bs. A small shipment of Island bananas, which arrived by the Navua on Wednesday, brought from 22a to 25s ex wharf; rejects sold from 18s to 235. Tree tomatoes realised from 3* 6d to 9b 6d, and a small quantity of hot-house tomatoes sold from In 3Jd to Is 7d per lb. DAIRY PRODUCE. Largs supplies of fresh eggs came to hand and met a keen demand, prices ranging from Is 4d to 1b 5d per dozen. Duck eggs sold on a parity with hen eggs, Farmers' butter was in fair supply, realising from Is 6Jd to la B}d per lb. POULTRY. Poultry was in small supply, prices differing little from those of last week. Prime cockerels, for which there was a particularly keen demand, realised from 6s to 9s Id; medium', 3a 6d to 4s 4d. Prime bens fetched from 4s 9d to 6s 2d; medium, 33 to 3s 7d. Ducks realised from 4s to 4s 6d and drakes from 2s 6d to 33. Pullets sold from 6s 6d to 8s 3d. FIELD PRODUCE. Potatoes realised from. 6a 6d to 8s per cwt. Oniona sold at 20a per cwt. Kumaras, local, fetched from la to lid per lb; Island, grown, lid. Pumpkins sold from 5s to. 8s per cWt, and swedes from 2s 6d to 3s. Tho market waa over-supplied with cabbages and cauliflowers, which wer© dull of Bale, cabbases fetching from Is to 4s 6d per dozen and cauliflowers from Is to 4s per dozen. Carrot*, parsnips, and beot brought from 9d to la per dozen; lettuces, 4d to Is 3d per dozen; celery. Is to 4s per bundle; rhubarb, 4s 6d to 6s 6d por dozen. CANTERBURY MARKETS. [BY TELEGRAPH- —PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The' produce market is almost devoid of life. The potato position, if anything., has moyed toward easier values. A couple of boats' during the week have taken small consignments, aggregating about 3QOO sacks, to Auckland, and the Opihi, and Wingatui are duo to leave within a week with further supplies, tho Wingatui. probably with a, big consignment. Tho sum of £4 5s per ton at country stations is being quoted. Sales have taken place at less than that figure, however. Farmers are offering, but not very freely, possibly their attitudo being that it is unprofitable to take- the tubers out of tho pit in. anticipation of finding a market. It was reported to-day that enquiries for pot a? toes had been received from Australia, but how export oan bo anticipated in face of the embargo cannot be imagined. . In any oase reports from Australia, are against a possible potato shortage there. Oats are weaker and B grade have been offered at 2s Bd. f.o.b. South Island, equal to. 2s Id la» country stations, and A grade at' 2s 10d. Chaff is weak at 55s to 60s at country stations. Blenheim Sb underselling for the North leland trade. Cocksfoot has come back. It is understood quotations, of Danish, seed have been made on a' c.i.f. basis of Bd' per lb. Local merchants who were nnoting 9d last week aro now naming B}d to Bld. So far it ifl not reported that actual purchases of Danish have been made. Quotations locally are 5d to 5Jd country station®. Linseed is inclined to be weaker, £14 being quoted to farmers. Cowgrass and ryegrass aro unaltered. Fowl wheat is quoted at 4s f.0.b., with littlo doing.
