ABUSIVE LANGUAGE.
UNION SECRETARY FINED. [by telegraph, —press association.] GREYMOUTH. Monday. William Balderstone. secretary of the ' \ Blackball, Miners' Union, was: charged with using abusive and threatening language to one Pendleton, a mine underviewer. 'It was alleged that he called him a " scab " at a conference in the mine manager's office. The defence admitted the use of the word, but maintained that the plaintiff had given provocation, and also that the manager's office was not within the, provisions of the Mines Act, under which the prosecution was taken! The defendant was convicted and fined £2 and costs.
