OFFENCE CAUSED BY LIQUOR.
PRISONER ESCAPES FLOGGING. A young man, Norman James Walsh (Mr. A. Moody), -was charged with indecent assault on a male, A statement he made to the police, admitting the allegations of the prosecution was read, accused pleading that ho was under the influence of liquor at the time. Thp jury found him guilty. On his behalf Mr. Moody urged that he was drunk when the offence occurred, and 'that as a result of an attack of meningitis he was peculiarly susceptible to the effect of liquor. Of recent years he had assisted to support his widowed mother.
In passing sentence His Honor said had he not been satisfied that prisoner had been drunk he would have ordered a flogging. A sentence of three years' imprisonment was passed.
